LWLC MS PD 2010 Term 3

Reflective Assessment of IWBs Using QTM

E-mail Print

Now that the "new" factor of the interactive whiteboards (IWBs) is wearing off, it's appropriate to evaluate their impact.  There are many different ways one could go about this.  I will recommend the use of the Quality Teaching Model as this may lead to a proper reflection on pedagogy.

The goals for this PD are:

  • Encourage reflection on the use of interactive whiteboards (IWBs) in the middle school.
  • Offer one model, the Quality Teaching Model (QTM), as a tool for reflection.

The Quality Teaching Model

QTMIn recent years, the New South Wales and ACT schools have used the Quality Teaching Model (QTM) to think about what pedagogies are being used in classrooms of all levels and subject areas.

The QTM suggests that there are three main features of classroom practice that are linked to improved student learning outcomes.  According to the flyer "Quality teaching in NSW public schools: Information for parents, caregivers and the community" these features are:

  • teaching that promotes high standards of intellectual quality
  • teaching that promotes a quality learning environment
  • teaching that develops and makes clear to students the significance of their work.

That same flyer proposes the following about QTM:

"Teaching that focuses on these three features has a positive effect on students’ learning. It engages and challenges students and leads to better educational outcomes."

(Note: all of the web links needed for the exercise described on the handout can be found below here.)

Here's what the proposed exercise consists of:

1.     Choose one of the tools offered

2.     Explore the tool

3.     Imagine a teaching/learning scenario that employs the tool and an IWB

4.     Suggest elements of the QTM that would be strengths of the scenario
